I’ve heard sailing described as “the art of getting there.” That phrase best describes what we do. In our sport, the destination is much less important than the journey itself.

The founding of the Great Pond Yacht club has been and will continue to be a delightful journey. Along the way, Barb and I have had the pleasure of meeting new friends and working more closely with old ones.
We’ve engaged in many conversations with you about what a new yacht club could do, how it could fit in to the Belgrade Lakes community, and how it should be set up; so, I want to congratulate you on the result. Because of what your feedback and suggestions have contributed to this effort, I believe the Great Pond Yacht Club will become and remain an organization that area sailors will enjoy being a part of for generations to come. This is how long-standing traditions are born!
Some of you have contributed above and beyond to this journey. I want to express my gratitude to Sheldon and Lisa Perkins (our social coordinator and treasurer and also owners of Yes! Marketing Group) who designed our logo and website and who also took some amazing photographs of our inaugural event during Memorial Day weekend. Thanks also to Howard Lowell, who designed our burgee. I’ve been sailing all my life and seen many burgees out there — and ours is the coolest by far.
I also want to thank our big sister, the Rome Yacht Club, for the use of their email list in our early days. Without the support and encouragement of the members of the Rome Yacht Club, the Great Pond Yacht Club may never have gotten off the ground.
Now, it is up to you to carry this tradition into the future. Join the effort to promote sailing; participate in events; bring friends; and tell people about the club. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it. Enjoy what we have created together — but more important: Enjoy the journey of making it even better.
